How Power, Instinct & Connection Shape the Highland Rift Pack

I love grounded magic — the kind that sits quietly in the background, shaping tension without overwhelming the world. That’s the flavour you’ll find in a lot of my favourite urban fantasy, and in my Death & Visions series, where Visions are subtle, unsettling, and tightly woven into the mystery.

But when I write paranormal romance, I also like the magic to be big.

Not flashy for the sake of it — but elemental, instinctive, and deeply tied to who the characters are. In the Highland Rift Pack, magic isn’t something characters use. It’s something they are. Their power shapes their identity, their relationships, and the emotional risks they take.

Power That Drives the Story

Elemental magic in this world isn’t decoration. It’s a force that pushes characters into conflict, exposes their vulnerabilities, and challenges them to grow. Power becomes a catalyst — for danger, for desire, for change.

I like magic that complicates everything:

  • the danger
  • the longing
  • the trust
  • the choices they’re terrified to make

Big magic raises the stakes, but it also sharpens the emotion. It turns every moment of connection into something charged, something that feels like it could break or transform them.

Instinct That Shapes Identity

Shifters bring another layer — instinct.

Instinct pulls them toward people they’re not sure they should want.

Instinct warns them away from the very thing they need.

Instinct forces them to confront truths they’d rather ignore.

That tension between instinct and choice is one of my favourite things to write. It’s messy, intimate, and deeply human, even when the characters aren’t entirely human themselves.

Connection at the Heart of It All

For all the power and instinct in the Highland Rift Pack, connection is what truly shapes the series.

I love the way paranormal romance couples fight their way toward each other — even when they’re stubborn, wounded, or convinced they’re better off alone. Watching two people realise, slowly and painfully and beautifully, that they’re stronger together than apart… that’s the emotional core of the series.

Magic raises the stakes.

Instinct complicates the journey.

Connection makes it worth it.

Why Big Magic Belongs in My Paranormal Romance

Writing the Highland Rift Pack lets me explore:

  • identity shaped by power
  • instinct clashing with emotion
  • supernatural bonds that run deeper than logic
  • worlds where danger and desire collide

I love the quiet tension of low magic.
I also love the world cracking open.

Both have their place in my writing — and both have my heart.
